Wicket Season – Review Part 1

I have plenty to say about this book by Gabrielle Prendergast and I will share my thoughts with all of you in another post. For now I want to give the floor to someone whose opinion of this book is more important than mine—my brother, Ludnick.

Ludnick is 11 years old and in the 6^th grade. He loves sports, especially baseball. He reads but only if there is nothing else to do. He nagged me to interview him as soon as he finished this book. Here are his thoughts.

How did you get this book?

*looks confused* You gave it to me and made me read it…

Did you like it?

Yes, actually, I really liked it. At first I thought, “Cricket? How boring!” But after that, when I read it, I realized it was a pretty good book.

What did you like about it?

I liked the fact that *pauses thinks* Well, [my family is] West Indian/Caribbean and this sport and book relates to West Indians.

What was your favorite part?

[SPOILER-ISH ANSWER] My favorite part was *thinks* Well there were a lot of good parts.  During the final game [Harry] was battling his friend’s team… and it was in front of his parents and the girl he was trying to impress. He had to get the six to win the game and earn Deepa’s love. [The book] didn’t say if he got it or not. That was good because it left me thinking. [End SPOILER-ISH ANSWER]

Did the book make you change your mind about cricket?

Yes. In fact I thought it was a boring sport but it’s actually pretty cool.

If you could, how would you make this book better?

Make the story longer! Also, in the prologue [the story starts with] Harry as six years old. I would like it if at the end it skipped to when he is, like, 30 and a professional cricket player.
