When I went to Seattle in July, I started quite a few bookish travel traditions. One of them was reading a book by a local author.
My friend lent me her copy of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie during my visit. Our days were packed with nature-filled adventures so she expected me to read it when I got home and ship it back to her. Instead I took advantage of the early morning quiet (I woke up at six am Pacific Time every morning… yay jetlag?) to devour the fantastic YA novel.
When I visited Chicago in August, I was set on reading a Chicago book. I planned to read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros but my library didn’t have the ebook and there was no time to go pick it up. Instead I read Divergent by Veronica Roth. I had a few issues with the world-building and likely won’t pick up the other two books in the trilogy, but it was a fun read and I loved visiting some of the places in the book, like the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier.
As a bonus, I picked up The Fall of Five by Pittacus Lore at Midway Airport on my way home and was able to hold on to Chicago and it’s iconic landmarks (The Bean!) and architecture for just a little while longer.
This is definitely a tradition I want continue. My next trip is to New Jersey! Who are your favorite Jersey authors? How about a book set in Atlantic City? Tell me what to read on my Thanksgiving long weekend in the comment section below!

This Is How you Lose Her was great! I really need to make time to read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.

I believe that Junot Diaz’s books are set in New Jersey. I think he’s fabulous.
